What are Field Sobriety Tests?

A field sobriety test is used to measure a driver’s mental and physical abilities. By testing the driver’s balance, coordination and ability to follow instructions, law enforcement is looking to get a better assessment of whether the driver is under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. There are three main field sobriety tests used in Polk County:

  • Walk and Turn: walk 9 steps in one direction, heel to toe, and then 9 in the other direction.
  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus: follow an object, finger or light with the eyes.
  • One Leg Stand: stand on one leg with the other raised approximately 6 inches off the ground, while counting aloud.

There are a number of factors which may influence your performance on field sobriety test. What if you are wearing high-heeled shoes? What if you have allergies or are ill? What if you have a physical injury or problems with your eyes? Age, weight and a natural ability to follow instructions may all influence your ability to perform well on a field sobriety test.

A skilled DUI lawyer will be able to evaluate your particular case and your field sobriety tests in order to determine how to challenge your charges.
